India

He woke up four inches below the snow like bed. But the day ahead was going to be as treacherous. He felt excited because travelling to rural India gave a smile to his face. Indian villages to a good extent still practice their civilisational old traditions. The air is different, the land for miles is green. But leaving Delhi behind is a lengthy affair. Their is an infrastructure push. Hundreds and thousands of trees that once gave beauty, breath and shade have now given way to expressway and highways and along with it empty, always being constructed high rise buildings. Slowly we start going past it. And we start seeing cow dung cakes kept for sun drying for kilometres. For centuries cow dung cakes known as “upla” in Hindi are used for cooking, cleaning homes and for homa- the fire worship. It’s smoke is known to purify the environment killing small insects and creatures. Many years ago someone said to Nara about India, when he was roaming in the river valleys of Kedar, that India …

LAST FLIGHT OF AN OWL

He kept looking towards the sky while floating in the water kept for cows. Big round button yellow eyes like ever watching you do the doing. His death seemed such that at one time I felt he chose it. But would a predator or anyone can choose his own death? May be. But When Maharaj arrived, he first closed his eyes. May be he needed someone to close his eyes before it could be plucked out. May be he earned this burial. To only put a stop to this cycle. May his body rests and the spirit awakens. Aum Shanti

Svah

Slowly I have started smelling like fire. There is nothing more to feel one with the divine than this. Ash is all over my head, my clothes, my legs are bereft of a sole. Pouring Ice water every morning on head now seems a ritual. And fire a family. Is it because of these squirrels that i have started listening to. Or that bird in the morning quietness who comes sits by my bed in the darkness of the dawn. Something will change. It is asking something and saying something i cannot hear. Hear hear. Close your eyes.

In the land of Snakes

Twenty six days ago and three hundred fifty kilometers north I Moon I reached Aldona late in the night. It was Purnima, the full moon of Holi. Vishwan was away, gone to a border village, tsar. A place somewhere in the middle of the jungle at the border of Goa and Maharashtra. But I had no idea of that then, I was waiting. I sat downstairs at the bar. Grandmother was pouring feny to a local. She told me about Vishwan smoking too much. The room was lit with two cyan bulbs. He arrived. We kept my backpack at his place. He lit his cigarette. We sat. His hair had grown and white; beard thickened and black. Soon, we were off, feeling the dense wind of the leaving winter, scooting through the western ghats in the night going towards the moon. We entered the fair. Vishwan parked the vehicle somewhere outside and we started walking away from the lights towards the jungle. It was late. But it wasn’t dark. The night seemed to have dissolved with …

Here or There

Those are golden days when in you a confusion appears. Of paths. Two. Not same but similar. You are free to go on either. You have time and you have the means. Both filled with just your kind of memory pleasures. You can even smell that fragrance of the past through your memory. To both the destinations journey is similar. Similar. Similar! Can a journey to similar sounding places be similar? It will be of highest essence to learn which road will take you closest to your end. Unless you haven’t seen your end and lived it inside you several times before, you might only reach half way and feel satisfied. Because it is only you who will determine it for yourself, others will take part, some will show the way. Many shall distract. The end determines the journey more if not as much the process itself.

Learn to give

Dawn 12 1:14 AM New Delhi I am still struggling to write daily. Even though intentions seem strong but after continuing for four days to five I have seen missing one. School is doing well and in these last four months that I have happened to stay at one place, after many years I learnt about a lot about my own school. Setting up a studio and taking classes, understanding there world and spending crucial time with them on their important days has been enriching. Today I and mother went to the printers and designed a report card. She had been wanting to change the way a report card looks. It has to be playful for smaller children, so we went. I could find some really nice themes sitting with the designer. I will share it soon. – I ask myself a question by the end of everyday. What did I learn today? And many a times I fail to get an answer. There are so many things that one does, little by little. And …
