Finding Music

The poet-priest Kabir says, the first thing in the morning, do not rush off to the work. But take down your musical instrument and play it. Then test your work in the same way. If there is no music in it, set it aside, and go find what has music in it, for you to play it again.

Hi, I am Narayan Kaudinya. And i welcome you on this journey, the Road to Nara ! I am an Ethnographer and a practicing Indologist. I did my masters in History and further learnt Sanskrit, Yoga and Nerve-therapy. At 24, pushing most academic sounding, office sitting works away, i felt compelled to know and understand the world and my country, Bharat/India. I travelled, and as it happened i took up teaching in Kashmir and further up in the remote villages of Baltistan in the foothills of Karakoram Ranges. For around three years and many states later there came a time when i felt that it was only while teaching i learnt how to laugh, to see, feel, breathe, love and cry -with children, and mostly resource-less parents in the harshest-freezing border conditions. I write, and work as a documentary photographer and Filmmaker, with numerous published, exhibited and some awarded stories. In my travels and life i have let nature lead me, the divine mother, and as a Yogin, my resolve here is to share my experiences and thoughts as honestly, and through them to blossom in everyone the power and possibility in pursuing your breath, that you seek your true nature with courage and curiosity. Here, on this road i will share my spirit, my love for nature, the elements of life that are us. And in doing so, i'll be happy to see you along.

  1. There is a great deal about playing your favourit music then meets the eye. Studies have shown
that those who started playing music in childhood have an unusually thick corpus callosum – the bundle of nerves that acts as an information superhighway between the left side of the brain. That is important in difficult times as music is the opposite of despair. It brings us back to life and determined to fight. Playin music is therapeutic and stimulating.
Thank you, Narayan, for highlighting this.

    • 🙂 Kabir is one such guy, Richa seriously. Do you know till last year, barring this one of course, in few villages of Madhya Pradesh there used to be a Kabir Yatra, where singers and their followers used to walk in the day time and sing all night long for a month. To experience that was be with divinity.

      • Amongst his long list of beautiful verses…Maati Kahe Kumhaar se…is etched in my mind…he summarises everything about life in one verse…
Malwa Kabir Yatra I’ve actually heard about from a mad traveling friend of mine. One day i do wish to witness it 🙂. You’re really lucky you’ve witnessed diverse and soulful renderations

  2. Without taking too much time, I need to add that students listening to Mozart musing during their exams do much better because only Mozart wrote his music to correspond with a heartbeat. Patients in a coma when played their very favourite music/songs, react and recover quicker. All I can say, we should make sure that our family knows what we like, one day it could save our life.

    • Yesterday i was watching a Werner Herzog film, death of five voices. It explored the music of Carlo Gesualdo(i think italian) and the legends surrounding Gesualdo’s personality. And how his environment was effected by him. There is no doubt music or rhythm of sound will be of utmost importance if one can carry in his or her life. I wish i could do better. So much so when i was working on ‘Singsong’, i only thought of my father, to dedicate it to because he never sang 🙂

    • Hi Rupal, lovely to have you with your bags of poems. Music is inside. It will only play once you will start knowing the chords. Please be patient. It will happen.
